The Bird Tribe

The Bird Tribe is a one-man band, in which I play and mix the instruments - much like Enya, but not as well! She's great!

Our first of seven albums was "In Search of the Bird Tribes", which is based on ancient Native American legends. It tells a story, much like Rick Wakeman's "Journey to the Center of the Earth."

We're halfway through making an online movie of the whole album and will be posting it here as well as several others places. Watch the full album here on YouTube (opens in new window).

Why this name?
I was heavily influenced by the Bird Tribe legends of the Native Americans and it was my first album.

Do you play live?
Because it's studio-generated, I don't play live. Too complicated. I produced several live outdoor & indoor concerts and it was really a nightmare keeping everything going smooth for the musicians - I didn't even get to watch my own concerts!

How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
Music wants to be heard and I think the Internet, so far, has allowed that to happen much more than the mega-corporation record labels.

Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
I'd have to think about it. At the moment, I'd have to say no.

Your influences?
Pink Floyd, Ray Charles, Enya, great movie themes, The Moody Blues, Kansas, Bonnie Tyler, Jefferson Starship, Heart, Alan Parsons Project ... there are SO many!

Equipment used:
AKAI drum pad, MIDI keyboards (Kurzweil RG100, Yamaha PSR220, M-Audio Key Studio), acoustic guitars (Fender Starcaster and Fame w/pickups), Windows/Mac synthesizers and sequencing, editing, generating and conversion programs like Audacity, CoolEdit Pro and many, many more.

For videos I use MovieMaker and Serif Movie Plus as well as several other programs for tweaking video codecs, etc.

Anything else...?
I design CD covers, websites and anything graphically connected to music, as well as mastering work for other musicians like my friends, tommie rose, tranzport music and Teri Garrison. I do this to help care for my wife, who has severe arthritis and has had two strokes - I need to be with her 24/7 to care for her, so I work pretty much from home.
