WHAT IT IS

The Muzik Store is part of the "chain" of Phoenix Foundation stores, which offer e-books (regular and audio/video), music (downloadable and on physical CD) and film (DVD Vintage Classics), in an attempt to bring the Internet world a comprehensive source of all three media.

Every month we offer 23 FREE downloadable albums (look to your left for this month's choices) that are hand-picked picked by more than 375,000 Jamendo listeners. You'll never have to pay for fresh, legal music downloads again. Ever!

Why settle for the generic crap shoved down your throat by the top music labels like MGM, EMI, Sony, Warner Brothers, ad nauseum? Music is changing, and MUSIC WANTS TO BE FREE ... so hop aboard the Free Music Express now!

Want more? Go to Jamendo for over 10,500 FREE album downloads, with more being added all the time.

HOW IT WORKS

The Muzik Store works like this:

  • 1. You can download an album/track for free (if it's available free by the artist or label) from the album playlist, or
  • 2. You can order a physical audio CD sent by U.S. Postal Service Priority Mail. You pay the USPS rates and must sign to acknowledge delivery. Currently we only deliver within the United States.
  • 3. We make no profit whatsoever from the physical CDs, in accordance with the non-commercial terms of our licensing. This is strictly a non-profit, non-commercial service.
  • 4. Some albums are sold above cost, but only when the artist, label or publisher has set those terms and they do not fall under Creative Commons licensing terms. Each album's terms will be clearly labeled.

What I'm still trying to work out is the column you see to the left. Do I list the albums by genre (even though many artists may fit into many cross-over genres) or do I list them alphabetically (which may be meaningless to you if you don't already know who you're looking for)?

I'll probably combine a site-specific search engine capability with a genre listing so you'll be able to do both.

DOWNLOADS

This is the best choice if you have fast Internet connection, like a cable modem. Be aware, however, that some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) like Comcast will deliberately slow down or cut off your connection to prevent you from downloading music.

They are also starting to charge extra for "unlimited" use; they decide what "unlimited" means ... and it does not mean "unlimited" in the terms everyone else means. It's like buying a gallon of milk, but every dairy has its own definition of what a "gallon" is. Some dairies are already doing this.

Similarly, ice cream makers are now selling a "gallon" of ice cream that is really only 3/4 of a gallon - and charging you the same. It's been all over the network TV news lately.

This is in the courts at this time and has become a hot consumer issue, but many others are also starting to do the same thing, so they can give the bandwidth to their commercial customers and ignore the individual Internet user.

This is the result of President Bush, the FCC and Congress eliminating the concept of a level playing field on the Internet. Again, the big corporations get it all.

If you download the free tracks or albums, you can play them anywhere you want (unlike iTunes and many others), make as many copies as you want to share with friends, etc.

BUT you must abide by the terms of the Creative Commons License (for example, you can't make any profit from sharing the songs) or the original artist can take you to court and win, because in downloading the music you agree to the terms of use.

All downloads are in MP3 format.

PHYSICAL CD SHIPMENT

This is the best choice if you have a slow Internet connection, such as a dial-up modem.

If you order a physical product, it is made available to you at our cost (typically $6 for CD production, artwork, packaging in a hard-shell case, and shipping materials (envelope, labels, time, etc.). As our albums become more popular, we expect the production cost to drop.

In addition we ask for a minimum $4 contribution to the artist who has made his/her work available to you for free. This goes to the artist's account through PayPal; if he/she does not have a PayPal account, it is sent to them monthly through Jamendo's accounting system.

You receive an audio CD which will play on any CD player.

Under the terms of the licensing agreements with each individual artist, we make no profit from providing the physical CD to you.

The indie music marketing classic
Guerrilla Music Marketing Handbook

As seen in the major motion picture The School of Rock ... and in VIBE, Music Connection, Electronic Musician and American Songwriter magazines

There's never been a better time to be an independent artist. The rules have changed, and they keep on changing -- for the better. Artists have more power to control their own careers than at any time in history. But change and empowerment can be confusing (especialy when it comes to marketing and sales).

That's why you need this classic guide to low-cost, do-it-yourself music promotion -- now revised and updated for 2007.

With this manual, you'll discover that music marketing doesn't have to be expensive to be effective. Whether you're promoting a fast-growing indie label or a one-man or one-woman act from your basement, the Guerrilla Music Marketing Handbook gives you the tools you need to get the maximum bang for your buck!

"The most directly applicable, start-tomorrow, creatively inspiring book I've ever seen on promoting your music!"
-Derek Sivers, president of CD Baby

"Bob Baker's advice is practical and concise. There is GREAT material in this book, and it helped me put my Internet and alternative marketing ideas to good use. This is a fantastic book!" -Geoff Byrd, GarageBand.com's best-rated artist of 2004
